Eco Candle Making Requires Many Things to Consider and Test Before Using Indoors:
Things WBC continually tests:
1. Natural Wax Selection:
- Prioritize Natural Waxes: Natural waxes that burn cleaner and produce minimal soot and smoke.
Wax blend combination that has been tested to work best:
- Soy Wax: Made from soybeans, renewable, biodegradable, burns cleanly with less soot content and non-toxic emissions, making it suitable for indoor use.
-
- Beeswax: Although natural and sustainable, it is meant for pillar candles and not containers.
- Coconut Wax: Sustainable, renewable, biodegradable, known for a smooth, clean burn and excellent scent throw.
2. Sustainable Wicks:
- Choose Lead-Free and Zinc-Free: Traditional wicks can contain metal cores, but eco-friendly alternatives avoid these harmful metals.
- Recommended Wicks:
- Cotton Wicks: A staple in eco-friendly candles, they are made from natural fibers, are renewable and biodegradable, and provide a clean burn.
- ECO Wicks: Coreless wicks made with a paper filament braided with cotton, offering a rigid structure and self-trimming properties.
3. Safe Fragrances:
- Natural Essential Oils: These provide natural scents and therapeutic benefits without the potential downsides of synthetic fragrances.
- Phthalate-Free: Synthetic fragrances can contain phthalates, which are linked to health issues.
- Essential Oils: Choosing compatible essential oils for eco candles is challenging since they do not work well with all wax types and require much testing.
4. Eco-Friendly Dyes (Optional): Although natural Dyes exist that are extracted from minerals or plants for a non-toxic coloring option. We chose not to make candles with any dyes, thereby minimizing ingredients to burn.
5. Sustainable Containers:
- Container selection was just as important as the other ingredient selection. They had to be good-quality jars, regardless of cost, that could be repurposed at work and at home.
6. Practice Safe Burning Habits:
- Proper Ventilation: Regardless of the best eco practices used, everyone must ensure adequate air circulation when burning candles.
- Trim Wicks: Trim wicks to about 1/4 inch before each use to reduce soot and ensure an even burn.
- Limit Burn Time: Don't burn candles for extended periods (e.g., limit to four hours at a time. First time, please burn for at least 1-2 hours).
- Never Leave Unattended: Always supervise burning candles and extinguish them properly.
By following these guidelines and choosing the right materials, you can create and enjoy eco-friendly candles that are safe and healthy to burn indoors, contributing to both your well-being and the environment.
