PTSD Awareness Day on June 27th and Aroma Therapy

Well Building Connection aims to improve indoor living at work or home by focusing on air quality, water, and products that enhance comfort for better living in buildings where we spend the most time.

PTSD Awareness Day is on the 27th of June. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a significant mental health issue. It’s estimated that around 3 in every 100 adults will experience it, but it is not frequently discussed.

PTSD (or PTSI - Injury) affects individuals who have not only survived wars and catastrophes, but also those who have experienced assault and abuse in relationships.

Although many essential oils can be used for PTSD, Frankincense, Lavender, and Rose are currently used by @wellbuildingconnection in our candles, soaps, and oils.

What Causes PTSD?

Scientists do not yet fully understand what causes PTSD. Some suggest it may be the brain's way of preparing for repeat incidents. PTSD is commonly associated with flashbacks, which can be triggered by sights, sounds, smells, or emotions. These can make an individual feel like they are reliving the initial event or experiencing disassociation.

How Can Essential Oils for PTSD Help?

Research shows that the body can produce neurotransmitters through olfaction. When relaxing essential oils for PTSD are inhaled (or when baking, smelling flowers, etc.), olfactory neurons express GABA and serotonin, which are involved in numerous bodily processes such as digestion, mood, and sleep.

Inhalation of Essential Oils for PTSD

Taking time to inhale an essential oil can have significant effects. If possible, aim for several minutes while recording notes about oils while inhaling can help maintain focus and enhance the experience.

One Important Note When Using Essential Oils for PTSD:

We only use the following 3, but you can search scents that you find pleasant—

·         Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is soothing, relaxing, helps with sleep, and reduces anxiety.

·         Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense is effective against panic attacks and promotes rational thought. It has been historically valued by priests and kings. Frankincense oil is added to candles, with a piece at the bottom of each candle.

·         Rose Essential Oil

Rose oil, often used for its calming properties, is present in the roses growing at our property in New Buffalo, Michigan. It helps with relaxation, improves sleep, and may assist those with insomnia.

Consult a physician before starting any new treatment; essential oils and aromatherapy can enhance mood through their scents.
